Gas Safety Week 2026: Take No Chances

The 16th annual Gas Safety Week is taking place 14-20 September 2026.

Coordinated by Gas Safe Register, the official list of engineers who are legally qualified to work on gas, Gas Safety Week brings the industry together to help raise awareness of gas safety and the simple steps people can take to protect their homes, families and communities.

This year’s theme is Take No Chances – a simple but important reminder that when it comes to gas safety, risks should never be ignored. If something does not feel right, customers should act. If an appliance needs checking, they should not put it off. And if gas work needs doing, they should always use someone who is qualified and Gas Safe registered. Taking the right action can help protect people from the risks of gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. CO is known as the silent killer because it is highly poisonous and has no smell, taste or colour.

This Gas Safety Week, customers are being reminded to:

  • Book an annual gas safety check with a qualified Gas Safe registered engineer.
  • Have gas appliances serviced regularly, in line with the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Check that their engineer is Gas Safe registered before any work begins, and ask to see their Gas Safe ID card when they arrive. This may be a physical or digital card.
  • Install CO alarms marked to the standard EN 50291, and check that they are still in date where an expiry date is shown.
  • Act quickly if they suspect CO poisoning or a gas leak. They should turn off the gas appliance if it is safe to do so, go outside, call the gas emergency number on 0800 111 999, and seek medical attention if they feel unwell.

Help stop unsafe gas work

Help protect people by reporting unsafe and illegal gas work. If you believe gas work has been carried out by someone who is not registered, report it to Gas Safe Register at GasSafeRegister.co.uk.

Get involved

With events, advertising and PR activity taking place across the country, Gas Safety Week is a simple way for the trade to show its commitment to keeping the nation gas safe. To get involved and receive free materials to help raise awareness, visit: GasSafetyWeek.co.uk.
