EAL update on apprenticeship assessment and standards development
As the apprenticeship landscape continues to evolve, EAL is updating its customers – including training providers, employers and partners – on the latest developments relating to apprenticeship assessment and standards.
Standards revisions: what’s happening now
Almost all of the apprenticeship standards EAL currently offers are now in revision. This reflects the wider reform programme aimed at ensuring apprenticeships remain high‑quality, relevant, and aligned to employer needs.
At this stage, none of the revised standards that EAL currently offers has yet been published. Work continues behind the scenes with employers, stakeholders and Skills England to shape the future content and assessment approaches for these standards. EAL will share updates as soon as revised versions are approved and published, and remains committed to supporting you through any transitions. Alongside its current offering, EAL is also looking at potential new standards to add to its offering as each one is refreshed.
Mandatory qualifications and optional units: current position
Another area generating questions relates to mandatory qualifications within apprenticeship standards, particularly where those qualifications include optional units.
Skills England has indicated that, where mandatory qualifications contain optional units, they are likely to map only the core units of those qualifications to the Knowledge and Skills (K and S) statements within the apprenticeship assessment plan. This approach is intended to ensure consistency, clarity and relevance across standards.
However, it is important to note that this position is not yet fully confirmed and remains subject to final agreement within Skills England’s mandatory qualifications policy. Further details and formal guidance are still expected, and EAL will share confirmed information as soon as it becomes available.
