Going for glory: Manchester apprentice makes it to the final of Screwfix Trade Apprentice

A talented apprentice from Manchester is celebrating after being named one of the top ten finalists in this year’s Screwfix Trade Apprentice competition.

Cary Rudd, aged 20, who is currently studying a City and Guilds qualification in Plumbing and Heating at Salford City Skills, fought off strong competition from more than 3,000 applicants from across the UK and Ireland to secure a coveted place in the national final and the chance to take home a career-boosting prize bundle of tools, training and technology worth £10,000.

Standing out from the crowd

Since beginning their plumbing journey, Cary has particularly enjoyed developing problem-solving skills and being able to see projects through from start to finish.

Cary’s passion, work ethic and determination blew the judges away during the semi-final stage, earning him a place in the final ten.

Speaking about reaching the final, Cary said:

“I struggled to get an apprenticeship as they weren’t really promoted at my school. But since starting, I’m already keen to set up my own plumbing business and help young people in the local area who want to follow a similar path. I’m really keen to learn more about gas and renewables in the future.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to have made it to the final of this year’s Screwfix Trade Apprentice competition! When I first applied, I never dreamed I’d get this far – it’s an incredible feeling.

“This journey has been all about pushing myself, growing as a plumber, and striving to be the best I can be. To have my hard work and passion recognised on a national stage is truly amazing, and I can’t wait to see what’s next!”

The final

The two-day final will take place at Google HQ in London on 29-30 April, where the top ten will take part in workshops, networking sessions and a face-to-face interview with an expert judging panel.

The panel includes representatives from the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering, National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting, Federation of Master Builders, and Martin Daly – Screwfix Top Tradesperson 2025.

Sarah Howell, Director of Marketing Communications at Screwfix, said:

“Each year we’re blown away by the calibre of applications we receive for Screwfix Trade Apprentice, and this year was no different. The final ten apprentices have achieved something remarkable, standing out from over 3,000 applicants to earn their place in this year’s final. Their talent, hard work, and commitment to their craft are a testament to the bright future of the trades, and I know the judges have an incredibly tough challenge to choose a winner.

“This competition plays a crucial role in highlighting the importance of trade apprentices, not just as individuals, but as the driving force behind the future success of the industry.”

Celebrating the next generation

Screwfix Trade Apprentice shines a spotlight on trade apprentices across the UK and Ireland.

By recognising emerging talent, Screwfix aims to inspire more people to consider a career in the trades and showcase the rewarding, skilled opportunities the sector offers.
