JTL hosts parliamentary reception on the future of the plumbing workforce

This week JTL welcomed MPs and peers, senior civil servants, plumbing industry stakeholders and employers to a parliamentary reception focused on the future of the plumbing workforce and the role of apprenticeships in strengthening the skills pipeline.

The event provided a timely opportunity to explore the significant challenges facing the sector, including workforce shortages, falling apprenticeship starts, and the need to strengthen skills and competency pathways. With England’s plumbing workforce now around 16% smaller than in 2018, and apprenticeship numbers declining over the past decade, the discussion highlighted the urgency of coordinated action and the need for new plumbing apprenticeship standards to be brought forward in a timely manner.

MPs were able to engage with constituency-level data on apprenticeship starts provided by JTL and hear directly from apprentices and employers how providers deliver high-quality training through employer partnerships. The importance of increased SME participation and stronger Government support was a key theme, with a shared recognition that both are essential to building a sustainable pipeline of skilled workers.

The reception also showcased JTL apprentices, including a pipe rig demonstration from apprentice Dan Thompson, employed with OJ Plumbing & Heating, providing a practical insight into the skills being developed across the sector.

As the UK works towards net zero and delivers major infrastructure projects, the role of skilled plumbers will be critical. The event reinforced the importance of collaboration between Government, employers and training providers to ensure the sector is equipped to meet future demand.
